Haunted-House Fiction 

‘All houses are haunted—by memories, by the history of their sites, by their owners’ fantasies and projections or by the significance they acquire for agents or strangers.’ (B. Curtis, Dark Places : the Haunted House in Film).

In this seminar, we will discuss the use of the haunted-house trope in two novellas and their film adaptations:

Henry James, The Turn of the Screw, 1898 (Penguin Classics).

Ø  Jack Clayton, The Innocents, 1961.

Susan Hill, The Woman in Black, 1983 (Vintage, 1998).

Ø  James Watkins, The Woman in Black, 2012.
