Description

While Creative Writing, as a discipline, is most often associated with explicitly literary activity, a closer examination of contemporary art since the middle of the 20th century presents other possible understandings, notably of the place of writing creatively within or as art practices. Artists such as Robert Smithson and Yoko Ono have significant branches of their oeuvres centred on or consisting wholly of writing, and 21st century art exploring archival practices and other institutional displacements have introduced a strong tendency to introduce textual information into their work. The lines are often blurred, with literary scholars studying the artists’ books of practitioner-theorists like Johanna Drucker, and curators opening spatialized exhibits of poetry-based work such as that of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha or Jim Dine. In these contexts, questions arise around what divides art and literature, what constitutes an art practice, and who stakes claims on the meanings of written work.

In this writing workshop, students will explore what is possible when Creative Writing is taken as one possible grounds for art. They will explore what can differentiate writing from a writing practice, look at how writing can function in extra-literary ways without necessarily abandoning literature, and experiment with developing an artistic form of writing of their own. Prior experience in the Arts, Creative Writing, or any related field is not required. Students will be expected to experiment, take small risks, and think critically about what we can do with language, while engaging in weekly exercises and exchanging with peers. The workshop will be conducted in English but will welcome writing in other languages.
