Description du contenu de l'enseignement

Introduction to localization

In this localization course will be presented the main concepts involved in the localization practice: globalization, internationalization and localization.
Then, the different types of content that can be found when localizing a product: marketing, UI and help. Other topics such as culturalization and how it is related to localization will be discussed.
What's more, will be discussed the different profiles that can be found in a localization company and the different models (in-house or outsourced). But also briefly the concept of web accessibility.
Finally, the different processes involved in the localization cycle, from the product preparation to the quality assurance right before launching the product. Innovative workflow models such as the one labelled as "continuous localization" will be discussed.

The students will go around the localization tools by taking a MOOC Google course.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Understand localization main concepts and practices.
  • Understand how CAT tools work and their applications to localization.
  • Understand the quality control process and project management practices in the field of localization/game localization.
  • Understand video games and game localization industry.
  • Understand game localization as a translation field that combines features of localization and audiovisual translation.
  • Understand the different text typologies to be found in game localization: in-game, scripts, marketing material, legal, user guide, etc.
